very cold climate (-20 C) have to use 5w30 or even 0w20 otherwise the engine won't start. the same car used in very hot climate, 20w50 can give better protection to the engine for cold start. there are some very good oils cover wide range of temperature such as 5w50 synthetic oil which would suitable for most climate. using oils better than the recommended one by manufacturer only help the engine better rather than damage it.
