I might be inexperienced as you said, but here is why

1) tranny fluid is not only providing lubrication, it is a hydraulic liquid;
2) over time, particularly if you are in a severe environment like AZ, the break down occurs earlier. "Heat kills tranny". When you smell it and you see darkened color, the breakdwon already happened;
3) Manual says 3 years, it's true, but that is not referring to DIY, it is a pro change, "flush" completely then refill;
4) DIY would mean drain and fill, how much can you drain out? 50%; each time you change the fluid, you only get deluted not fresh.
5) Your car transmission probably is the best in the world, what brand is it? for such long time you never changed the fluid? Congrats.
