Help: want to buy a family car

My wife found a job around DC area and we are going to have a baby on Oct. I am in charge of looking for a suitable (price, space, etc.) family car. My first response is to buy an SUV. Do you guys have any suggestions (by the way, I prefer not to buy Japanese car, but not a restriction). Thanks in advance.
