suv vs minivan,which one should I buy?

I am ready to change my sedan into a bigger vehicle. the main reason is the safty concern. I have hard time in choosing from a suv and minivan. I have heard so many pros about honda polit and odyssey. Both vehicles have almost the same seats capability and power output. so which one should I choose? what's the main difference between these two vechicles? is there any significant advantage from one over another one?
