IMO, it's not always about patriotism. One of the newer concept in political discussion nowadays is that consumer can influence policy makers with their dollars (or RMB, or Yen...) It's called "consumer sovereignty" and it's a form of democratic practice.
Like Bonbon's post about whether you want to reward European and American car makers for their innovation or Japanese car makers for superior management. Ultimately, you consumer dollar turns to job opportunities, tax dollars, and you want the job opportunities and tax dollars to benefit you, or at least the country you like better.
Some people go for the extreme as to find boycott XYZ company because they donate X amount of money to Republicans or Democrats etc... It's certainly within their rights if they want to go for such trouble.
