The old hierarchy (the way she used to relate to people around her) becomes an impediment. By distancing herself away from her old self that everyone is familiar with, she creates space for her renewed identity.
Mother is helping her in that process. The risk is that she has no influence over what goes on via that little screen. Hopefully, by showing respect, the daughter will reciprocate.
Chinese children have a harder time to break that mold the grown-ups around them try to (unconsciously) keep them in.
