In the process, people lose their individuality,

which then leaves a vacuum. This vacuum will be filled eventually, by who?

It comes down to: boundaries have been violated, or pushed inward, leaving less space for the individual.

When a child doesn't know where the right boundaries are, that's not a good situation to be in.

Teaching children about the boundaries is the obligation of every parent, so that when they grow up, they'll not be easily intimidated or manipulated.
