Personal growth often happens during difficult times. You can ask him what difficulties he is experiencing, how he is coping with those diffeculties, what he appreciates more now, what opportunities this situation may offer, etc..
One can find meaning if he looks for it, no matter where or when. Or, he can sit there and yell "give me meaning!"
