Why Hitler decided to invade Soviet Union?
Hitler's motives to invade the Soviet Union are unclear to me at best, but we can piece this together.
First of all, Hitler believed in the theory of Darwinism and evolution. This is the cause of his thinking of inferior/superior races (Aryan, etc.) This is also one of the reasons he invaded Soviet Russia in the first place; The very fact that he viewed Russians as an "inferior race" to be expunged from the continent likely furthered his devotion.
Secondly, he wanted Lebensraum, or living space. By Darwin's theory, the species with the most living space would prosper. The Soviet Union had many places where resources were abundant for the Reich's war machine (especially as they themselves lacked natural resources greatly). Also, it would ease the naval blockade that British Royal Navy deployed, the blockade potentially could starve Germany. The blockade also starved farmers of vital agricultural items like seeds they needed to make foodstuffs.
Third, Hitler wanted world domination and the annihilation of all but Aryans. Just like France, he would've sawn Russia as "a great barrier" to power. Knowing his experience in the First World War (where he served as a frontline enlisted soldier), he wouldn't use politics and tactics after the war to wrest power from the Soviet Union, either. There would simply be too much red tape for someone like him. Hitler might've also believed in a number of other things beyond my knowledge.
Fourth, At the time, Britain refused to surrender, and Hitler had no other means of defeating Great Britain.; so, Hitler tried to employ a "you are all alone, go surrender" tactic. By making sure that Britain had no allies to employ this, he had to remove Soviet Union from the equation.
Fifth, Hitler was also rather deluded and hubris; his own military intelligence said that it was very likely to defeat the Soviet Union by the end of 1941. They did figure that the Red Army wasn't ready for an attack quite yet, but not much more. The Germans also had some feelings of over confidence, as they had a powerful air force and much better trained soldiers. Still, Hitler seemed to ignore that he had less factory production; and even an inefficient citizen body to run production.
Hitler being Hitler, he believed that sheer might could beat anything; even might without supplies or troops. His generals couldn't simply say no; they had to say yes, even though they understood that they couldn't do a single thing.
