Academically, most Chinese students should be able to handle the study easily at top colleges. Because of the high standard on Chinese students, they are at the top range at any of the colleges.
What makes it difficult is the social pressure. Many parents may not be well adjusted to the American society themselves. So sometimes children may feel they have issues nobody can understand.

Throughout their lives, their parents teach them the value of hard working. One day, they may face the reality that high GPAs and hard work may not bring the success they think they deserve. The value system crushes.
I would highly recommend parents to understand the culture of the specific college before sending your children there.
