Shocked parents storm out of 'racist' school concert after youngsters sang folk song about picking cotton

  •
  • Springfield Middle School in northwest Ohio held contentious concert Thursday
  • Eighth-grade choir sang the folk song 'Cotton Needs Pickin' for fall concert
  • Some parents said the song was racist and one even walked out of performance
  • They linked it to recent incident with district students showing Confederate flag

Some parents have cried racism after a middle school choir sang a folk song about picking cotton.

The eighth-grade choir performed 'Cotton Needs Pickin' during their fall concert on Thursday at Springfield Middle School in Lucas County, Ohio, prompting at least one parent to storm out of the performance.

Parent Nicole Maulsby, who is Cuban, posted a video of the performance on Facebook, later deleting it.

She claimed that a song about workers picking cotton is a racist reference to black slaves toiling in the fields of the South.

A black woman in the crowd mouthed 'Oh my god' to Maulsby during the song, and her husband Alonzo, who is black, stormed out of the auditorium, she told the Toledo Blade.

The short song includes the lyrics: 'Cotton needs pickin' so bad, we're going to pick all over this field.'

COTTON NEEDS PICKIN' LYRICS

There are different versions of the folk song, but typical lyrics include:

Oh, cotton needs pickin' so bad,

Cotton needs pickin' so bad,

Cotton needs pickin' so bad,

We're going to pick all over this field.

We planted this cotton in April,

Under the light of the moon,

We've had a hot, dry summer,

That's why it opened so soon.

Oh hurry up, hurry up, children,

Look at the weather vane,

The wet wind's blowing t'ward us,

I think it's going to rain.

Springfield Schools Superintendent Matt Geha said the song came from a book of American folk music, adding that he hadn't received any calls on Friday but was aware of the complaints circulating on social media.

Some tried to draw a connection between the song and a separate incident with students from another school in the district.

At a Christian Young Life event off campus, which had a 'country' theme, students with the Christian youth group Young Life were reportedly seen posing with a Confederate flag.

'Come on Springfield. This is the song you sing just a week after the confederate flag issue?' radio host Charlie Mack wrote on Facebook, according to the Blade.

However, the superintendent said that the song had been selected in August and had been part of rehearsals since then.

'I know that timing can sound bad, but it's a historical component for what the choir department had to use for their curriculum,' he said.

Springfield Middle School has a student body that is 65 percent white and 18 percent black, according to state data.
