I got news for you...college didn't fail the US...greed failed the US.

When you run a college like a whorehouse, eventually the neighbors start to complain. 

Football is where it started, not that I am blaming a symptom for the disease but when college football started asking for retard courses so their "student athletes" could make it through their 5 years without studying, the other "students" started taking the scam classes as well. Then all the "students" graduate with a degree in PE or sociology or women's studies and were unemployable. 

Free money from big brother ( not referring to boynogrades here) helped to fuel the bubble in underwater basketweaving as always interfering with the market induced speculation where investment was more appropriate. 

I have seen colleges break ground for multi-storied technology centers...let that sink in for a minute.
