Tulane University incorrectly sent welcome letters and university email addresses to 130 prospective students Thursday (Dec. 15). Inside Higher Ed broke the story the next morning from emails sent to those students.
Admissions director Jeff Schiffman called the mistake "inexcusable" in an apology posted on Tulane's admissions blog and Facebook page. "We've created an anxiety so deep for this group that there really aren't words to describe it. I'll own up to it right now," Schiffman wrote. "I am sure many celebrated and posted on social media about it, as any admitted student should."
Schiffman regretted he could not make it right by welcoming those students in the fall: "Admitting an additional 130 students is much easier said than done and greatly throws off the size of the class. It simply can't be done."
He did not yet know how the error happened but said the erroneous email came from Tulane's technology services office.
Schiffman, a 2005 alumnus, moved into the job this summer after more than 10 years at the university, according to a press release.
