Let me get it straight, this family's AGI is $480,000, and this family is considering asking for finicial aid?  The high end salary of a typical  Financial Aid employee is about $70,000. Assuming   the student is admitted  to the most expensive college, the cost of attendance is $75,000.   Your friend needs a financial advisor .  Any decent advisor should work.  Any decent advisor will probably suggest your friend look into the 529 plan.
