Harvard tells its students to spend the holidays lecturing their relatives on police brutality, welcoming Syrian refugees and how its own campus is not 'safe' for blacks

It then offers answers on how to respond to the complex questions

Harvard has advised students to lecture their non-Ivy-League relatives on liberal values in a bizarre set of holiday placemats to take home over Christmas.

The laminated cards raise some likely hot topics that lesser-educated family members may raise at the dinner table, then offers a suggested response.

Covering such complex issues as police brutality, racial divisions, and the Syrian war, one of the sections tells students to say: 'Racial justice includes welcoming Syrian refugees.'

One question to be braced for is: 'Why are black students complaining? Shouldn't they be happy to be in college?'

In response, the worldly scholars should 'calmly' explain: 'When I hear students expressing their experiences on campus I don’t hear complaining.'

Students are also told what side to take on the issue of murdered black teenager Tamir Rice in 2014 - an issue which continues to divide the country.

To make it through the spate of pesky questions, Harvard advised, students should 'breathe' and 'listen mindfully'.

The cards have sparked outrage, with many slamming the creators for telling students what to think about highly complex talking points.

Final-year student Aaron Hendricks told the Harvard Crimson: 'I don’t think that’s the place of any Harvard employee to tell students the right way to think about the Syrian refugee crisis.'

Now, two deans have come out to apologize for the stunt.

Thomas Dingman, dean of freshmen, and Stephen Lassoed, dean of student life, said in a letter to students on Wednesday: 'We write to acknowledge that the placemat distributed in some of your dining halls this week failed to account for the many viewpoints that exist on our campus on some of the most complex issues we confront as a community and society today.

'Our goal was to provide a framework for you to engage in conversations with peers and family members as you return home for the winter break, however, it was not effectively presented and it ultimately caused confusion in our community.'

Syrian refugees

Your loved-ones will ask:

'We shouldn't let anyone in from Syria.

'We can't guarantee that terrorists won't infiltrate the ranks of refugees. They've already done it in France.'

You should say:

'The US has been accepting refugees from the war-torn areas around the world for decades

'...Racial justice includes welcoming Syrian refugees.'

Black murders in the street

Your loved-ones will ask:

'Why didn't they just listen to the officer? If they had just obeyed the law this wouldn't have happened.'

You should say:

'In many incidents that result in the death of a black body in the street, these victims are not breaking the law and are unarmed.

'With Tamir Rice [the officers]... gave no verbal commands and shot within two seconds of arriving at the scene.'

Your loved-ones will ask:

'Why are black students complaining? Shouldn't they be happy to be in college?'

You should say:

'When I hear students expressing their experiences on campus I don’t hear complaining.

'Instead I hear young people uplifting a situation that I may not experience.

'If non-Black students get the privilege of that safe environment, I believe that same privilege should be given to all students.'

Between each question, one should...

- Breathe

- Listen mindfully before formulating a thoughtful response

- Ask questions when people express strong opinions

- Clarify the difference between the good intentions and the impact

- Speak from a place of mutual interest, sharing personal experiences and emotions

Jasmine Waddell, a freshman dean, defended the placemats.

She told the Crimson: 'This is a way to say, "You’ve been exposed to a lot of different ideas, and particularly in this moment when there’s a lot of discussion about various topics, you’re going to go home and you may or may not be able to speak the same language."

'It’s not that you have to believe in what’s on the placemat, but it gives you some tools to be able to have productive conversations.'
