Covering the Cost of Dartmouth
Don't let the cost of a Dartmouth education scare you. Through our generous Financial Aid program, we're committed to making Dartmouth affordable to everyone in the world. For every single student who requires financial assistance, we will help cover the cost of room, board, fees, and tuition. In fact, families with significant need often find that our Financial Aid program makes the cost of attending Dartmouth less than the cost of a local public institution.
Dartmouth's Financial Aid Program
We believe cost should never be a deterrent to a Dartmouth education. We back up that belief with one of the world's leading financial aid programs. Dartmouth awards over $80 million in financial assistance to its students. The average scholarship for the Class of 2016 was over $40,000.
Admission to Dartmouth is need-blind for all students. We offer need-based financial aid. We meet full need for all admitted students. So, what exactly do those three things mean?
- Need-Blind: We admit students to Dartmouth without regard to your financial circumstances. Admission to the College is based on your talents and not on your ability to pay. We don't limit the number of students receiving financial assistance in each incoming class.
- Need-Based: Dartmouth awards scholarships and financial aid on the basis of a student's ability to afford the costs of a Dartmouth education. As a member of the Ivy League, Dartmouth does not award academic, athletic or merit scholarships.
- Meeting Full Need: Using the information presented in CSS Profile and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), Dartmouth guarantees to meet 100% of a student's demonstrated financial need. When calculating need, we include all of the costs of a Dartmouth education—including tuition, room, board, books, fees, funds for some other living expenses, and travel for students who live far away from campus.
Students coming from families with total incomes of less than $100,000 and typical assets receive free tuition and no loans at Dartmouth. Many of these students receive scholarship assistance to cover the other costs of the Dartmouth experience.
We understand that a Dartmouth education is a big investment for students and families. Visit the Financial Aid Office website to understand our commitment to making Dartmouth an affordable choice for students from all backgrounds.
