Yes, there are so call "grey market" Yamahas.  The 86 C3 is more likely one of them.  Most of the dealers won't tell you about that.  With the serial number, you may find the info via Yamaha's website.  If the dealer knows you have found the truth, they will tell you there is no difference.  It is not true.  And they are more than just "reconditioned" and using cheaper parts instead of the original parts.  They are not bad for the money.  Also depends on which part of t
