送杜少府之任蜀州
—— 王勃
城阙辅三秦, 风烟望五津。
与君离别意, 同是宦游人。
海内存知 己,天涯若比邻。
无为在歧路, 儿女共沾巾。
Seeing Vice-Magistrate Du Off to his Post in Sichuan ①
by: Wang Bo (650 – 675 or 676 Tang Dynasty)
tr: Rhapsodia(晚枫)
From th' capital around which th' old lands lie,
I gaze to the five ferry docks in haze ②;
The parting feels sad when we say goodbye,
For both left home and are on our post ways.
So long as there's a bosom friend for me,
The world's end seems the next door neighbor close;
At this fork road let us lovers not be,
To wet their handkerchiefs with tear outflows.
Note:
① Sichuan has both “Chuan” and “Shu” as its shortened forms. It is a province in the southwest China. Chengdu is its capital city.
② Five ferries docks refer to the five piers along the Min River that flows through Sichuan Province where Du is posted. Therefore “five ferries” stands for Sichuan Province.
