The title system in a typical wall street firm is as follows:
Managing Director>Director>VP>Associate>Analyst
And it may have some variants. For example, it may add "executive director" title for those who are senior enough but not promoted to managing director level. Some firms add "senior VP" between Director and VP. Some firms have "Associate/Assistant VP" between VP and Associate. Some firms like GS don't have Director level a few years back.
In other financial firms such as insurance companies and mutual fund companies, VP is higher than Director.
Besides these titles, there are many functional titles.They tend to put fancy names. For example, "global head of xxxx" even the group has only a few people.
