I pick the M&H still. Reasons:
1. Size. You get much better sound out of it. The CW’s sound is excellent in its size, but the M&H considerably taller. If your child grows into a relatively more advanced player, (is that what you are hoping?) you have to replace the CW much sooner than the other. Now a days, most of the makers group their products into something as: Console (42-44 inch), studio (45-46’), upright (47-48’) and taller upright (50-53’). On the used market, there is another category: Spinet (under 42’), which has discontinued for its inferior quality.
2. The age difference won’t affect your use much. Both are well built in the relative old fashion way. They will last longer than most of the Asian pianos. However, come to resale value, age counts.
3. FYI: I looked up Larry Fine’s supplement 2009 to his Piano Book, the rankings of the two are closer than ranked in the main book, though M&H still ranked better than CW.
Whatever your decision is, have a technician check out the piano for you and double check the age by looking up the serial number. The technician should have a book called Piano Atlas and be able to verify that for you.
Also, if your pick is the M&H and one day your child grows into a serious player, hire a good technician to regulate piano, not just tuning. It will turn into something really nice.
