trumpet or trombone?

my son, a 6th grade boy, did the band fitting, 5 for trumpet, 5+ for trombone. had a trumpet tryout lesson. the teacher said trombone was a better choice but trumpet was not bad at all.

My son wanted to pick trumpet because he thinks trombone is too big. But he's not sure now.

Any suggestion? and which one is less competitive and easier to get in all state bands? Thanks a lot for your help.
