“Coffee enemas have become a popular form of liver, bowel and colon cleansing. Although many holistic claims are made regarding the beneficial aspects of coffee enemas, there is no hard scientific proof that they actually detoxify any of the organs. As well, the potential dangers of a coffee enema should be taken into consideration, which include internal burns, electrolyte imbalance, caffeine addiction, and decreased function of the bowel. One common purported danger of coffee enemas is the possibility of burning the tissues of the rectum and colon by using coffee that is too hot. In a Letter to the Editor in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, a doctor notes that a 60-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital with severe lower abdominal and anal pain after using a coffee enema four days prior. Internal Burns
Ellen Landauer, on her website Peak Health Now, recommends counteracting this possibility by always testing every batch of liquid to be used for an enema. Simply immerse fingers in the liquid for at least five seconds.
Another possible danger of coffee enemas, as noted by the American Cancer Society, is the potential reduction of potassium from the body leading to electrolyte imbalances. This theory is based on the belief that nutrients, and not just solid waste, are removed from the colon when performing an enema. According to the American Cancer Society, any ongoing and continual use of enemas can potentially cause the colon to weaken and become dependent on the enema for waste elimination, leading to constipation, and potentially colitis. Once the body becomes reliant upon the enema in order to stimulate a release-- without it the body will have a harder time dealing with the elimination of excrement. Some experts believe that excessive use of coffee enemas may potentially lead to an addiction to caffeine. At the same time, Ralph W. Moss, PhD. relates that while the Office of Technology Assessment points out the possible addictive qualities of coffee enemas, they fail to do the same with coffee ingested through the mouth, though caffeine is well-documented for its addictive properties.”Electrolyte Imbalance
Landauer disputes this theory, noting that "electrolytes are absorbed from the feces in the ascending and transverse colon, before the solid matter moves into the last part of the large intestine."Decreased Function of the Bowel
Caffeine Addiction

“Some proponents of alternative medicine have claimed that coffee enemas have an anti-cancer effect by "detoxifying" metabolic products of tumors.[4] There is no medical scientific evidence to support any anti-cancer effect of coffee enemas.[2][5][6]
Coffee enemas can cause numerous side effects, including infections, sepsis (including campylobacter sepsis), severe electrolyte imbalance, colitis, polymicrobial enteric septicemia, proctocolitis, salmonella brain abscess and heart failure.[4][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] If the coffee is inserted too quickly or is too hot, it could cause internal burning[14] or rectal perforation.[15] Long term use of coffee enemas can lead to malabsorption of fat, fat-soluble vitamins, and calcium.[16]
The use of coffee enemas has led to several deaths as a result of severe electrolyte imbalance, hyponatremia, dehydration, pleural and pericardial effusions.[8][16] The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ruled that study participants must be warned of the risk of death from coffee enemas in studies that use them.”
