While Friday the 13th is typically considered an unlucky day, in the twisted world of the stock market it actually hasn't been that bad. Going back to 1945, the average daily percentage change for the Dow Jones Industrial Average has been a gain of three basis points (0.03%) with positive returns 52.1% of the time. On Fridays, the average daily change increases to six basis points with positive returns 53.4% of the time. There's a reason they say TGIF! For Fridays that are also the 13th of the month, however, the average daily change is a more impressive eight basis points with positive returns nearly 59% of the time. That's quite an improvement from the average daily change for all days.
In the table below, we have highlighted the DJIA's daily change for each Friday the 13th going back to 1990. Over this time period, the DJIA has averaged a gain of 0.21% with positive returns 64.7% of the time. One caveat to the positive returns, however, is that in recent years Friday the 13th has been a lot less positive. Since 2000, which covers a period that hasn't exactly been great for stock market returns, the DJIA has seen an average change of 0.0% with positive returns 50% of the time.
