Different school has different way to handle postdocs. The place I work treat postdocs the same as regular employee--retirement, health plan, vacation.The title could be Associate,Scientist, or specialist.
However, there are difference regarding where the salary comes--hard money or soft money. hard money supported position are more stable than boss' research funding.
