It has been verified that the C172 was made by Samick. The model is part of the Baldwin’s entry level line, though the scale design copied Baldwin’s model R in the Artist series. Other constructional designs were still those of Samick, except the soundboard. Baldwin upgraded Samick’s laminated spruce to solid spruce. Other than those, the C-172 was similar to Samick’s SG-172 in other specifications.
The model was discontinued around 1994/1995. The list price then was around 12K.
S. Korean started to make in the middle 20th century and came to US market around the late 70s. There were dozen trade names used by Samick. Before the Chinese pianos, Samick was the king of the entry-level market. It made more units annually than anyone in the world, though under different names.
Unless Baldwin used different system, serial numbers on all Samick made pianos have four letters followed by 4 numbers, such as ICAA0001 (1993) or IDAA0001 (1994). By looking at the 2nd letter, one can determine the year of the piano; A-1991, B-1992, C-1993, etc.
