Charitable foundations have nothing to do with preserving personal or family wealth. I think you are confusing some of the high profile, brand name charitable foundations, which are regulated with many restrictions and discloure requirements, with family offices that are largely unregulated, highly private and typically low key investment management entities.
Also, Steve Jobs' wife is a former investment banker and a graduate of Stanford business school. She has a track record of establishing and running businesses. She is probably reasonably well positioned to manage family wealth, if you ask me.
