resources for paying college education should come from past (saving), current (income), and future (loans).
2a. Most of people will have some saving outside their retirement accounts. Paying for your kids' education should take priority over other purchases. For parents with younger kids, you really need to consider how to save some $$ for education.
2b. income is relatively fixed per parents. However, have you counted in your child's ability to earn significant $$? My DD made over $8,000 in her first summer. This summer, she could easily make another $7,000. Both my kids have jobs during the school and they pay for 100% of their books and other personal expenses from their jobs. As a resident assistant, DD's room and board will be discounted by 75%.
2c. other current factors. You will see you routine expenses at your house drop because no more E/C, nor more piano lesson, etc. You could claim significant amount of education credit per your tax.
2d. Multiple kids. Please talk to the school about their policy on this one. At our DD's school, they cut our EFC by 50% when DS got into school last year. On the other hand, DS's school would only offer 40% discount.
#3 loans. If you are truely low income like us. You will get subsidized loans -Perkins and Staffords. The interest in low and the Government pays the interest while you are in school. It is not that bad to have 20~25K subsidized loans for all 4 years. It is basically a cheap car.
If you figure all the 1, 2, and 3 you still felt the budget is tight. Go talk to school. All the good schools are "full need" schools. Go as early as possible when they have not given out all the reserved funds. I think I am one of the best per "how to demonstrate our needs". I think I will write a book about it after my kids are all out of schools. There is definitely an art of presenting yourself to FA officers.
Remember, you don't have to accept the FA offer. My advice is that you never accept the initial FA offer no matter what.
Paying for college education is difficult even for the rich people and it is especially challenging for poor people like us. With two kids in schools, we are paying almost $20,000 a year out of pocket and DS is taking out both Perkins and Stafford loans. But we are glad to tight our belts so we could give them a good starting point in their life.
