FYI, at GS, EMD (non-partner MD) (and anybody below EMD level) compensation for the entire Investment Banking Division is/has always been CAPPED at a lower number than $2mm. If you look at the PMD pool at GS, there are VERY few IBD/M&A partners that has less than 10 years of experience -- whether you include analyst years as part of experience. To put it in context, 3 years of analyst, 4 years of associate, 5 years of VP (for the top 10% or so), 3-5 years as EMD (again, for the top 10% or so), then, if you are lucky and exceptional, then you become a PMD. Partnerships are elected every two years. You do the math
Also, as many have pointed out to you and contrary to what other people seem to believe, it is not easy to be a successful investment banker. Many junior, mid level or even MD level bankers struck out against their own will before they make it. That's why making the partnership pool at some of those firms is such a big deal. That's the ONLY time for an investment banker to strike gold. (this does not apply to traders.)
