It all depends.  If the kid is brilliant and can get high GPA in ivy then definitely go to ivy.  Ivy graduates have a much higher enrollment rate to medical schools.  If the kid is not that great and can not get a high enough GPA at ivy, go to state school and shine over there and still have decent chance.  As people have commented, it all depends on the course selection.  All grades are curved and only a small percentge of As.  Every school has hard and easy classes.  Saying one school's grade is inflated or deflated is nonsense since all schools have hard and easy classes (here is how average does not mean much).  Usually grading of hard science classes are tougher and grading of humanity classes are a easier.  But if the instructor grades humanity tough then is's not going to be easy either.  But generally speaking, the grading of hard science classes are tougher, which is why tech schools like MIT are tough to get high GPA since overall the whole school has a higher percentage of hard sciences.  But this does not necessisarily mean math at MIT is harder than Harvard's or Yale's.  Admission officers at medical school definately will think a MIT GPA 3.5 carrys more weight than some other schools'.
