Agree Putnam math is not the strongest point for Yale. But for undergraduate education, Yale liberal arts education is second to none. Yale has unsurpassed advantages comparing to Stanford in its name, long history, endowment and connections. Yale has need-based financial aid for international students and Stanford doesn't have is a reflection of these advantages. Contrary to what people think, Harvard rather than MIT has most Putnam scholars. HYP are well known for their liberal arts undergraduate education and their students are good for both science and humanities. Yale historically put more focus on humanities but their science is also respectable. Yale is expanding science programs and is trying to recruit more science students. I believe with Yale's rescources it will make it science programs even better in the near future.
