Sorry I was too busy at work, did not have time to come here. My son is in 5th grade now. Recently he had a lot of frustration in school in writing and socially. The school labelled him as a bad kid. We strongly disagree with the school. Then the school hired an out side psychologist to evaluate him emergently. The psychologist agreed with us and told the school that they need to do more completed tests to identify his problem. So the school did a core evaluation on him including an IQ test and achievement test which showed his strength and weakness. We aslo had him seen by a psychologist through our insurance. We are going to talk to the school regarding all the test soon. But the school may not given him much accommadation because it costs more for the school.
"old-mom", you said you son learns slow, but does he eventually get it if he takes his time? If he does, it probablly means that he just learns slower and needs more time. Some kids do not have low IQ but they just have low processing speed that makes them look like they can't learn if their problem is not recognized and given accommodation. You should let the school to do the test. The tests include IQ test and achievement test. They tell you how your son learns best and what his weakness is. If his IQ is average and his processing speed is slower than average, you should not agree to let the school lower his grade because he will always learn slower than average. All he needs is for the school to give him accommodation and to recoganize his best way of learning. All tests are cofidential. Don't worry about other teachers. They need to know in order to take care of your son. But the school will not tell anybody else without your permission. Talk to your coworkers who you trust. You will be amazed that there are so many kids need extra help these days.
To "old-mom" and all who replied to my son's special education
