Son is going to college.Should I open a $5000 traditional IRA

to get $1000 tax refund, and also would that help with his financial aid application? Now the EFC is $20,000 without my actual tax returns. It means I have to pay at least $20,000. Any one has experience with this? Thanks. 1st child in college.
