Each year, many parents will ask the AO this question:

Should my child take easy classes to get 4.0 or difficult classes such as AP that they might get a B. The official answer from AO has always been: we like students who take difficult classes and get A.

So, to answer your question, the official answer would be: 做名高里的尖子.

Based on our experience, I would like to guess the 中流 in a 名高 get better results than top students from a 普通高中.
