Highlander driver felt the car started slipping, and panicked and slammed on the break immediately. This caused the car to stop in the middle of the hill. Standing start on the hill is difficult. But when the wheels started spinning again, you can see that the car is still holding instead of rolling back - enough traction to hold the car there. It means that if the driver hadn't stopped, Highlander would have made it to the top of the hill. The second car slipped at the same spot, but the driver did not brake, instead kept the car speed constant.
