I think her daughghter is at the age where she is starting to think deeply about her identity. When kids are young they don't think of it much, as soon as they start to enter adulthood and start to realize how the real society is, they will try to seek a more definite answer on where they belong. This is a "second generation issue" that most kids have to face, sooner or later. At this point, parents should be supportive in an open-minded way when it comes to that.
