Eevry school is different and you have to look at the school websites (for financial aid website). For EA, most school needs CSS profile along with the application. That means, if EA deadline is Nov. 1st, then CSS profile will be Nov. 1st also. For FAFSA, you have to wait until after Jan 1st, 2010 for new version available. If accepted by EA, you may need update your CSS profile later when your 2009 tax return is available. You are using your 2008 tax return for EA CSS profile. Deadlines for FAFSA and updated CSS profile are usually around March 1st. Some schools do not need updated CSS profile since they will have your 2010 W-2 and they will figure out for you. One more thing, since deadline for updated CSS profile is around March 1st that is before you know the admission decision for regular applications, you will have to send in updated CSS prfile to the colleges you applied but a few will ask you to hold it until they accept you.

For CSS profile, you submit online. For many provite schools, they will later ask you to send in additional paper work like Tax return and W-2 to IDoc, a private service center, in mail. IDoc will handle the paperwork and communication between you and the colleges. Remember, there are some delays between the time you send in the paper and that the colleges downloading the files. I believe IDoc just make your hard copy files available electronically. You can track onlines or call to find out your status of the files. The good thing about IDoc is that you do not have to send in the files to all colleges one by one. Some other colleges just ask you to send them directly (mail or fax).
