Such thing often happens, and it has nothing to do with genius.

Take an IMO problem and give to a typical high schooler, without
much training it is easily take his/her several weeks to solve it.
But for others(like USIMO winners), it won't last a couple of hours.

My understanding is that the advisor of the first kid didn't think
too much about the problem.
