All leaders & countries make mistakes, Chinese leaders too. We need to step back & look at the China & Korean relationship from two perspectives:

1. On personal or emotional level,
How would China feel if China were in the North korean position? Well, it is not hard to imagin. How did China feel & react to the Soviet Union in the 60s when USSR started to warm up to the US & tell China what to do. Remember China was also trying to develop nuclear weapons then. Well, you know the answer.

China could have established only trade & economic relations with the South without a full diplomatic relation. This would have let the North save face while China could still benefit economically. In that case, China might have more leverage over South Korea today. I am sure the South koreans would knock on Chinese doors every day to establish diplomatic relations with CHina.

2. China's own national security,
Is it really in the best interest of China's national security to abandon North Korea & join the West to snaction the North? Is China going to be safer with a United Korea with pro-US governement?

Maybe the Chinese elites are too eager to please the West at the cost of its national security. If China knows the West policy is to contain China, why on earth China is distroying this buffer? Some elites may say China is worried about its image if it is too close to the North. Well, US is cerntainly not worried about its image in supporting Israel when the UN wanted to condemn Israel.

What China did to North korea might have made the West happier, but the containment policy against China is actually getting more aggressive. Just look at what all the countires around China are doing today.
