When my co-worker divorced his wife, his wife has NOT worked for 15 years. The ex-wife did get the house (not sure if the house is paid-off), half of all the savings, including 401K. However, my co-worker does not need to pay any spouse support. He does need to pay child support (till the kids are 18, who were 16 and 14 at the time) as the kids live with the ex-wife.

Of course, he was still much poorer than before.
