　据美国《纽约时报》报道，动物王国的武器装备在牙齿和爪子著称，但科学家发现一些动物的军备武器进行成了防御工具而不是进攻性的杀戮工具。

在重新考虑动物的性选择情况下，美国蒙大纳州大学的生物学家道格拉斯J.艾姆伦博士表示，自然选择的一种特殊形式导致动物出现了古怪的装饰和武器装备。他是在研究巴拿马的特种甲虫特种之后提出这一结论的，为了证实这一点，他广泛研究全球的甲虫，发现它们的武器装备确实是多种多样。

不过，它们的武器主要有二种策略：一种是以圣甲虫为代表，它们通常切割动物粪便，然后带走用作个人消费；另一种策略是其它甲虫擅长挖地洞，将动物粪便拉到它们的地洞里贮存起来。艾姆伦惊讶地发现，只有挖地洞的甲虫进化出了角，雄甲虫用它们的角来保护自己的地洞不受其它雄甲虫的侵犯，而分割动物粪便的甲虫也时不时得和其它雄甲虫战斗，但它们没有长角。然而，甲虫生长和携带武器需要成本，艾姆伦博士发现，甲虫为了减少成本，它们的角呈现小型化和装饰化趋势。由于这些角的主要作用是攻击其它雄甲虫，因此它们的武器虽小但确实也具有很大的破坏性。不过，装饰性武器还是甲虫成功繁衍的标志性特征。以下是全球具有特别武器装备的一些甲虫。
