Our Chinese school teaches Chinese culture, history, geography, etc. besides just language. But as far as I know, some kids (not a small percentage) still don't appreciate learning Chinese, even though their parents have tried all possible methods, from standard Chinese to Ma Liping, to Sunrise, to Yun Yu Shi Zi ... From my experience, some kids are more talented in language than others. Also whether they start speaking Chinese at a very early age or not makes a big difference. For example, my younger son, he went to childcare center when he was 12 weeks old. Until my parents came when he was 3 years old, he was in an all-English environment during the day time, 5 days a week. His Chinese skill is uncompeteable to his older brother's, who accepted Chinese first before English. I think this is going to be an all-time difficulty for ABC's, to some degree at least ...
