you still can ask your kid to take them home,

esp. in the weekend. my son told me the same thing for 5 yrs, till recently he couldn't remember what he learned in social study(5th grade), and notes are too brief. I asked his teachers, all of them said that if he needs, he can take books home, just make sure he remember to bring them back.
