There was an earlier post about donating to the American Red Cross. There were also messages about other nonprofit organizations taking donations. Some read more like promotional ad in terms of matching dollars. The author may be inexperienced about the operation of nonprofit organizations (or there are other reasons). To put it in a simple way, no organization really operates "free." There is substantial overhead in all nonprofit organizations. 30% to more than 50% are not unusual figures for administrative costs.
If it's a legitimate nonprofit, there are ways to find out its operating costs. The correct way is NOT to call the office and ask the staff there. Do you ever meet a used car salesman who says he's making a profit on the sale? What you should do is to look at its annual reports. However, it's hard to sift through American Red Cross' records because of the complexity. The short answer is that the overhead is not a negligent portion. Whatever the person told you on the phone is just talking, and no more than that. Please be more cautious.
