What is the dealer exactly told you? How did they come up $1000+ quote? How much for the parts? How much for the labor? Use dealer's information to have cheap shop to fix it...
Here is my example... I ran into a problem with airbag light on a mini cooper. No one has the special computer to figure it out. I sent to the dealer... they finally find out I need to reprogram the module. So I had my cheap guy took the module out and sent to some kind of Mini service center in TX to reprogram it... The overall cost is very minimum comparing to just have dealer fix the whole thing.
