The so-called "white elephant game" is just a holiday fun. It is an occasion when you can re-gift things you don't want. In my group, people exchange things we received from client meetings, for example, mugs, pens, bags and T shirts with conference names printed. One director even put his own picture in a cheap frame (looked like a garage sale item). Nothing fancy is really needed. No need to be sad. It is just another culture we need to learn.
