I think they are real people, They might be different from others, but not "过于清高". When I read her books, I was impressed most was, under no matter what kind of situation, she tried to live a good life and not just complaining. I can never forget the part when she talked about cleaning public bathrooms. Instead of complaining how wrong she was treated, she tried to make her job easier by make the bathrooms really clean. These are not those "过于清高的知识分子" can do.
