Would like to have a discussion with other parents about this subject. Here are what I have learnt about these tests.
SAT is more on reasoning and ACT is more on what you have learnt. A particular child could be doing poorly at SAT but very well at ACT. For children that study very hard but not very good at reasoning, it is probably better to take ACT at senior year.
The universities typically care only the scores of M and CR reading sections. The scholarship etc, may look more heavily at the total score. And schools do superpose the best scores from different sittings.
A student woudl have a better chance at a school if his/her score is above the 75%. For top schools, that means 2350 or better.
Remember, there are 3,000,000 HS graduates per year in US along. Many of the top students apply to at least 3 schools. You must be the top 0.5% to have any chance to get into a top school if the only thing you have are standrad test scores.
