Can Kumon help improve a 9th grader's math or find an American t

My son is 14 and needs to work on his math. He started kindergarten here. His standard math score is very low in some areas even though he said he ranked top in his class. We'd like to get some help for him. Kumon teacher said he was weak in computation so he'll have to start from a very low level like multiplication. It will take 9 months to catch up with what his level is now(9th grade). My hu*****and thinks it may lower his self esteem and my son says he doesn't like the way the teacher explains after she gave him the assessment. The lady is from Taiwan and her English isn't too good.
There's a college professor tutoring math in our city. Should we go for him or the Kumon? He said he works with students' problems they have now. In other words, he doesn't have a plan and I think he only help students with their curren math class problems.
Can anyone share your input please? Thanks a lot. My son's math has been a big pain for me. I should have put more attention on it long ago. Please share your ideas. Thank you.
