怎么向孩子解释sex的问题？

昨天在路上，上小学3年级的女儿问起人类怎么繁殖后代的，can people control whether they have kids or not, 是否任何Egg都能divide and grow？我说有birth control, 但不是any egg can divide的。egg cell 要跟 sperm 会合之后才能divide and grow into organs；因为我们人体的每个细胞有23对染色体，来自母亲的egg cell有23条，来自父亲的sperm有23条， 会合之后才有23对。女儿下一个问题就问：how do they meet? 我想不出一个好的解释，只好拉出医生抵挡一阵。我告诉她，with doctor's help；the doctor retrieves the egg from mother, the sperm from father, and puts the fertilized egg back into mother's womb。她接着又问，what about animals with no help from the doctor? 我只好装不知道，拿别的事把她的思路岔开了。不知道美国的学校会怎么教孩子？
我觉得很难启齿讲述intercourse，不能给孩子一个科学的满意的答复。请过来人讲讲你们用过哪些招数应对孩子这方面的问题。因为家里有个小弟弟，我女儿也见过男孩的penis。谢谢！
