The idea is supposed to be college level studies for smart high school kids, so when they go to college, they can skip certain courses and get credits directly if they have AP scores.
But now it seems pretty much you need to take APs if you want to get into a decent college so everyone is taking them.
There are diff. subjects, such as math, biology, English etc. It is like a competitive sport nowadays to see who can take the most of them and get straight 5s.
